10:00 a.m. Sustainability Is It. But What is It? How does it fit into golf course management? Mr. Tom Mead, Golf Course Consultant, will lead this session. The concept of sustainability integrates environmental stewardship, social responsibility and economic viability. That is a big challenge that is not going away. Learn from Mr. Mead how this challenge can be met.
11:00 a.m. Sustainability Forum. Jim Hyler, USGA President has claimed that “we need to understand how brown can become the new green” at the USGA’s Annual Meeting last February. He claimed that many of the golf courses constructed and managed today are unsustainable. Are they? Taking concepts from Mr. Mead’s talk and the statement made by Mr. Hyler, Mr. Erwin McKone will moderate a discussion among a small panel of superintendents and lead participation from the audience on the real issues of sustainability at your course.

9:00 a.m. Controlling Poa annua in Your Golf course Fairways without Anyone Ever Noticing. Dr. Bruce Branham and his investigators have discovered a means to eradicate this plant from your playing surfaces. They have tweaked cultural and chemical practices to transition Poa annua infested turf to clean bentgrass fairways in a method only you will know about.
9:30 a.m. Everything you Wanted to Know about Nitrogen Fertility. Nitrogen is still the most reactive element we apply and researchers are still learning why. Dr. Branham will change the way you look at N fertility from now on.
10:00 a.m. Top Ten Rule Infractions made by Golfers and Top Ten Rule Infractions made by Superintendents. Mr. Jerry Williams, Past President CDGA is going to engage attendees in the Rules of Golf as it pertains to golf course maintenance. Don’t worry, there won’t be a test at the end of this section, but you will have a better understanding of how to play the game and how to set the course so the game can be played properly.
11:00 a.m. Creating a Sustainable Native Area. Native areas are supposed to be sustainable, right? Golf courses have and continue to take areas “out of play” and convert them to native plantings to save on inputs, enhance wildlife, and create a positive social impact. This doesn’t always occur as planned. Tim Moritz and Doug Bauer of Pizzo & Assocaties will talk about the concept of a truly sustainable restoration and share the most common pitfalls land managers make when attempting to go native.
