The Final Day

Today is the final day the greens will be open with the old Poa/Bent surfaces.  Tomorrow we embark on a process of fumigation and reseeding of the old greens to bring the turf to the 21st century and meet the expectations of greens conditions.  Over the last week we've slowly been prepping the surfaces for the upcoming reseeding.  This week we spent a great deal of time cutting the turf closer and closer to the ground as well as thinning the turf canopy.  By cutting the turf closer and closer to the ground and thinning the turf we are creating a better opportunity for seed to soil contact which is absolutely necessary for seed to germinate.  Over the next few days we will be doing heavy aerification to also create more areas for seed to contact soil and germinate properly.  We will document this process with pictures and detail explanation as we move through.  I'm very excited for what we are doing here at BCC!  Like I've told others, the new turf will help ease the mind during periods of hot as well as periods of ice as the new turf can handle such extremes.  Consistency will be the high point, to have consistent greens from the putting green throughout the course but also from the beginning of the season till the end.  We've had to be on a roller coaster with ball roll as greens heights and conditioning constantly change to protect the turf from the weather conditions.  The new turf although we still need to protect but not to the drastic extremes as we've had to.  Stay tuned for information as we move through the process of PHASE II.
