Accomplished Tasks!

Today we were able to accomplish a great deal.  Again, a bit on the chilly side but we had great success with mowing greens and fairways.  The start to the morning was slow as frost kept us from the course till about 9:30am but once the frost had lifted we were out at them.  Today marked the first mowing for greens and fairways.  There hasn't been a whole lot of growth due to these frigid temperatures we've been having but the first cut always cleans things up a bit and exposes a tint of green.  At the start of the year we always mow things a bit higher than in the normal season.  Spring is a great time to build roots, that is if it would ever warm up, but shoot growth has correlation to root growth.  That means the shorter the turf is mowed the shorter the roots are.  Height of cut is always a concern on the greens as it relates directly to the speed of the greens.  As growing conditions become more favorable we'll slowly bring the height of cut down to give the greens an adequate speed.  Throughout the spring we'll do a great deal of topdressing with sand as well as rolling, this will help with smoothing things our as well as keep speeds up to par.  We did topdress and roll this afternoon following mowing the greens.  Things are looking really good.  Covers were removed on March 16th with a couple covers put back into place.  Greens where the covers were left off have gone a bit dormant with the cold weather but things will be fine.  We need a few warm days and even a nice warm rain, this would get things to really wake up.  All in all things are slowly coming into shape and before you know it we'll be ripping drives down the fairways, sticking our second shots, and dropping birdie putts.

Picture from behind 12 green.  You can see on the green a numerous amount of colors.  These colors are different turfgrasses that display different dormancy colors.  I'll get a closer picture so you can see the different percentages of turfs we have in our putting surfaces.
