This week has one key word associated to it, PRODUCTIVE. When you get into November you never know how things will go, at any moment Mother Nature could say "time for winter." It's always a scramble to try and get those last few projects done as well as normal winter prep tasks. We entered the week with a lot on our list and I'm happy to say a lot got crossed off.
I stated earlier in the week we had three projects wrapped into one taking place, one of the three is now complete. This was the removal of the sod from the large mound behind 13 green and using it to repair tee edges and replace contaminated surrounds. Now with the sod removed we can begin excavation of the soil to build up the pond edge on 18, required by code for the clubhouse project. As we are removing soil we are accomplishing our plan to increase air flow for the 13th green. Since that mound was put in that green has had difficulties at times and this will help with turfgrass health and the greens overall condition.
Along with these projects we've completed rough and high traffic area aerification. We've been working on this the last few weeks. We will be looking at topdressing these areas with compost this fall/winter to help rebuild soil structure and durability. In spring we will be seeding thin areas and increasing fertility to help recoup the turf.
Lastly, dormant fertilizer applications have begun. Today we completed greens, tees, and approaches with a 21-0-0 Ammonium Sulfate, tomorrow fairways will be done. Last area to feed will be the rough, I anticipate that being done the week of Thanksgiving.
We still have a good deal of things to accomplish but the progress made this week was great. I look forward to getting more done, I'm the type that will take advantage of any sunlight and dry conditions available.
Attached are some photos of work done:
