Midwest Winter!?

Wow, walk outside the last few days and it takes you back to a normal Midwest winter temperature. Yesterday temperatures stayed in the 20's and today and tomorrow we may not even reach 20!
Bitter weather outside for the next few days brings our work back inside. We have been taking advantage of the moderate days to do some outdoor tasks, but today and tomorrow are a bit too cold. We'll tolerate this time though and continue our work on equipment along with organizing and making things more efficient around the maintenance facility. With a smaller facility, organization and cleanliness are key to optimizing our efficiency. Over the last few years we've slowly made adjustments and doing the same this year.
Outside Nels Johnson Tree Service are on property to begin our winter pruning. Last week we carried out some necessary removals due to disease and poor health but this week it's shifted focus to increasing appearance and health of the trees. We have been on a consistent program over the last 4 winters with pruning. In the winter of 2008 we began at the clubhouse and have worked through the course hole by hole. These next few weeks the Nels crew will be working on 12, 13, and 17. Pruning of deadwood, suckers, crossed branches, and over all shape of tree will be addressed. Nels is the best and most respected company out there when it comes to work on the golf course.
Last week I provided a post with some concern regarding desiccation. As a test Nathan went out and removed some plugs from suspecting areas to bring into a temperate environment. This has given us the ability to see how the turf responds to warmer ambient temperatures and the results take my mind from worrying a whole lot right now. It would still be nice to have a snow blanket for a month or so.
I myself continue to work on planning for the upcoming year but also preparing for the Golf Industry Show. I've compiled a list of people whom I will be seeking out while in San Diego for the education and trade show as well as the Superintendents National Championship.
Hope everyone is well! Stay warm!

Attached are some photos from over the last few days.
